Blanda Sampson,  born 2 Dec 1887 and died 4 Nov 1988 was one month short of her 101st birthday.  She was a 1907 graduate of Stoughton High School and at age of 22 she is listed on the 1910 census as a teacher at the Norwegian Synod Orphan’s Home (Martin Luther).

She continued her nursing career after discharge from the Army Nurse Corps.  Married Otto Meier, but at age 35 he died 9-30-1923.  They had one son, born 1-18-1922 in San Diego California. 

Blanda is listed in the 1925 Madison City Directory on East Mifflin Street with occupation Nurse, Wisconsin General Hospital
From UW Alumni News Wisconsin General Hospital:  “Soldiers were given some patient privileges at the first UW-affiliated hospital in Wisconsin.  Established by the state Legislature and constructed in 1924, Wisconsin General Hospital gave admission preferences to honorably discharged veterans of any wars in which the United States was involved if they were eligible for benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs and state residents for at least five years.  The superintendent of UW hospitals could also authorize reductions in the cost of care, based on the veteran’s financial need and hospitalization insurance coverage.”

The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, dated Apr 21, 1928, page 14 mentions that “Blanda Meier came on April 17 from the General Hospital at Madison and has assumed the position of superintendent of nurses…” She is again listed in the Leader-Telegram, dated May 25, 1929, page 3 as the R.N. superintendent of nurses, presenting pins to the class of 14 graduating from the Luther hospital school of nursing.  Also mentioned in this article she is a graduate of the Presbyterian hospital, Chicago.   In 1935 she was living in Hollywood California:

Her father, Sven C. Sampson was born May 13, 1861 in Norway and died in Stoughton Sep 5, 1892.  He is buried at the Lutheran East Cemetery.  

Her mother, Alida Hovland Sampson, was born Apr 14, 1867 in Norway and died Apr 18, 1956 at the age 89.  Alida is listed on the 1900 through 1920 Census as a tobacco sorter, initially living on Hillside Ave. and later Lynn St.  She spent the last part of her life in Los Angeles with her daughter Blanda and died in a Los Angeles hospital.  She is also buried at the Stoughton Lutheran East Cemetery.
