Baptist
Church
– also now referred to asFirst Baptist Church
In 1853 was first organized at
the Red Brick Schoolhouse on the site of the later F.B. Hyland home, NW corner
of Main and Page Streets.
1857
Re-organized
1862 First Baptist house of worship erected on the NE corner of Main and Page Streets. The building was 35 by 50 feet with a tower
at the front. First Pastor was Rev. L.
Mills who served for three years.
Mr. Lathrop
Cheney, prior to his death, donated a house and lot on West Main Street to be
used as parsonage. Church repairs were
made at various times and in 1901 and 1902 it was entirely remodeled.
The second structure was dedicated on March
16th, 1902.
The old
parsonage was sold and moved to another lot and a larger parsonage was
constructed. Today that second
parsonage, built 1905-1907, still stands.
In 1914,
members of the disbanded Free Will Baptist Church in Rutland united with the
First Baptist congregation.
The society
voted to disband in 1938.
