St. Ann’s
Catholic Congregation
–
The first
Catholic services were conducted in a private home by Father Etschmann of
Madison. Later, services were held in a
hall until 1868. During that year, land
on the SW corner of Jefferson and Seventh Streets to be used for church
property was purchased from Luke Stoughton, and a frame church building was
erected.
In 1919, the
first resident pastor came to Stoughton.
In 1931, the
old frame edifice was abandoned and a church building on the corner of Jackson
and Harrison Streets was erected. The
cornerstone was laid October 11, 1931 by the Most Rev. Samuel E. Stritch,
Archbishop of Milwaukee.
