Our
Savior’s Church -
On February
13, 1903 a group of Lutherans who had formerly been identified with the First
Lutheran congregation, organized Our Savior’s Church. Meetings were initially conducted in a hall in the
First National Bank building by Rev. I.A. Johanneson who remained pastor for
three and a half years.
The
congregation purchased a lot on the southeast corner of Division and East Washington
Streets, and in 1904 began the construction of a church building. This building was completed and dedicated in
1905.
Second pastor was
J.J. Lee who remained for nine years, resigned in Dec. 1915. He took a position in Radcliff, Iowa. He and his family made the trip in a horse drawn surrey. It took them 3 weeks.
1916 Pastor L.L. Nesvig was called.
1938 congregation voted to have Norwegian services the first Sunday of the month and English for the remainder of the month.
November 1948 Rev. Nesvig stated he had not missed a single Sunday service on account of sickness for the 32 years of his ministry at Our Savior's.
1955 Rev. Nesvig submitted his resignation due to illness.
1973 Our Savior's merged with Central Lutheran.
Our Savior's church building was eventually sold and used for the Stoughton Senior Center and the Stoughton Village Player's North Church Playhouse.
The steeple was removed and the church was demolished circa 1996.
