Big Daylight Department Store

Established in 1857 by M. Johnson with C. J. Melaas acquiring an interest in 1876.  The business continued under this management up to 1883 when a new firm was organized consisting of M. A. Johnson and C. J. Melaas.

“The stock carried embraces clothing, gent’s furnishing goods, hats, caps, trunks, valises etc., a speciality being made of fine custom tailoring.” 

“The members of this firm are pleasant gentlemen to do business with, are affable and obliging and they number their friends by the hundred.”

New building Built 1904

“The old frame structure adjoining the Opera House block has been removed and the work of excavating for Johnson & Melaas’ big store building has been begun.”

“On the main floor is Clothing, Dry Goods and Shoes.  The second floor carries carpets, curtains, rugs, ladies’ and children’s cloaks, and suits and millinery.  In the basement are house furnishings and five and ten-cent goods.”

“The Big Daylight Store was regarded is one of the most reliable firms in Dane County.  In adjoining building 22 x 110 has been added for a hardware department.”

Unfortunately this building was lost in the 1966 fire which brought down the Schultz Brothers and old First National Bank (see:  old Williams building) and (old Williams block and original opera house).
