Stoughton Wisconsin and Stoughton Schools Early Timeline:

1836:  The eastern part of the northwest territory organizes into the Wisconsin territory.

1847:  Luke Stoughton buys 800 acres, which later becomes the city of Stoughton in 1868.  North Street, and the land on "the hill" is the farthest northern boundary of this original purchase.

1848:  Wisconsin becomes a State.

The first school opens on the SE Corner on S. Division and North Streets, it was nothing more than a lean-to shack.  The Stoughton girls attending this school and Fanny Duncan is the first teacher.

1851:  Miss Duncan and her school moved into a new red brick schoolhouse, built on a lot on the NW corner of Page and Main, the location later becoming the site of Dr. Hyland’s family residence.  

1862:  Central Campus had it's first school built 1862/remodeled in 1876

1867:  Sarah Stoughton Turner and husband Mac, buy an Estate on the north-east corner of what later became known as "the hill" and Central Campus.  All five of the Turner children were born in this house.

1868:  The City of Stoughton is established.

1882:  East Neighborhood School was built on Academy Street.

1886:  West Neighborhood School built on Garfield Street (1899 and 1905 additions).

1892:  A new Stoughton High School was built on "the hill" in 1892 and again a newer / larger High School in 1908.

1900:  South Neighborhood School is built on Summit Avenue.

1917:  Central Grade School opened in 1917, the Junior High grades stayed in the 1892 school making the 1917 Central grades 1-6

1960:  The State of Wisconsin requires all rural schools join a K-12 District.

1960:  Yahara Elementary built on Wilson Street.

1962:  Kegonsa Elementary built on Vernon Rd.

1965:  Stoughton High School moved to new building on Lincoln Avenue.

1966:  Old 1908 High School on North Street becomes middle school.

1997:  River Bluff Middle School built on North Street.

1997:  Demolition of 1908 High School on North Street.
